arriving in greece

arrive as the sun is low in the sky, after twenty four hours of flights and transfers and coffee and fitful sleep. i can barely keep my eyes open but i can't stop photographing.... it takes a good twenty minutes to make it across the airport parking lot to our rental car because even the airport parking lot is too beautiful not to photograph! we sweep across switchbacks up and down the hillsides and the sky turns this orange-purple colour that is now etched in my mind. forget what you hear about greece being that blue blue colour.. to me, greece is that colour as the sun is low in the sky and the mountains are suspended in the haze.we are staying in a little seaside town, neither dave nor i can ever remember the name. our little place is up on a hillside, the road with a 45 degree incline that makes us so glad we have automatic transmission. we walk in the mornings to the bakery where people think we are greek and delighted to try to speak to us in english (of which their english is fabulous and we can barely remember the greek word for 'thank you'). we drink shots of espresso at an outdoor cafe that plays 80's dance music. we are still photographing all the things. mostly we are in that state of being weaned off of 'normal' life and back into the unknown and adaptability and wonderfulness that is being in a new place.there will be many more photos of this beautiful place i'm sure. but for now, we are quite in love.day three // june 2013 // greece
