TEN YEARS
9:15 pm and the timer goes off. Oven mitts on, tray on the stovetop. It's already been dark outside for hours, the days are getting so short.Yesterday marked ten years since we've been together. I pulled out my phone while we were waiting and googled 'what was popular in 2002?' and we remembered how the first movie we went to see at the theatre together was My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and that Jean Chretien was our country's Prime Minister, and that they were still making new episodes of Friends. It mostly made us feel way too old :) We remembered how when we lived in England, many years after we'd first met, but still a long time ago now, how we used to make everything together -- loaves of bread, cinnamon rolls, granola bars, bagels, all from scratch. We both could not actually fathom when we would have had the time to do this, but we barely ever do that anymore. And we missed it.So last night we got out the big jar of flour and the old recipe, and we made bagels. From scratch, with sesame seeds on the top. It was a lengthy but very rewarding process. The kitchen got so hot from the oven and the stovetop and the roar of the fan drowned out any other sound and our cat purred around our feet and we went between kneading and talking to reading our books to just sitting by the open window. It was heaven. Because life is made up of yes, those big flashy events but it's mostly made up of the everyday, whatever you choose to fill them with. And very simply, we marked ten years together, and toasted to all that life lived in between then and now.... :) xo, jenn
